Resort in Gorai, Mumbai
Gorai is where Mumbai runs out of road. Ninety minutes from the island city, the traffic thins, the palms close in, and the last stretch before the sand is ours.
Guests come to Palm Springs for a weekend away from Mumbai without booking a flight to Goa. Families take the pool and the park, couples take the quieter rooms, and companies take the banquet hall for offsites and annual days.
The rooms were built one at a time rather than to a single plan. Two are finished in ochre lime plaster with a blue mural worked into the wall by hand and a bathroom set behind glass. In one of them a full grown tree rises through the bathroom floor, because the room was built around it rather than the other way round.
Parking is free and inside the gate, WiFi is free throughout, and the kitchen sends food to the rooms all day.

Nature's Vault
A glass walled bathroom tiled floor to ceiling in patterned cement tile, with a mature tree running up through the middle of it. The room guests photograph most.
Semi Deluxe
The same handworked walls and mural, with a blue mosaic bathroom behind a full sheet of glass. Warm, low lit and quiet.
Deluxe
Cream and teak with marble floors, a wardrobe, and a table and two chairs by the window. The room for families and longer stays.
One of the best restaurants near Gorai Beach
Chillin is the resort kitchen and its lounge. The menu runs wide on purpose, with something for the grandparents, something for the children and enough on the grill to keep a table of friends busy.
Open to residents and to walk in guests, with the full menu sent up to the rooms.
Water sports on the sand at Gorai Beach
Gorai Beach begins at the end of our road. Through the season the sand carries jet skis, banana boat rides, horse and camel rides and the usual beach games, run by operators who work the stretch every day.
Resort guests are given discount coupons for the water sports at check in. Ask at the front desk when you arrive.
A base for EsselWorld, Water Kingdom and the Pagoda
Guests use the resort as a base for the day and come back to the pool in the evening rather than driving home in traffic.
EsselWorld and Water Kingdom
India's largest amusement and water park pair, roughly four kilometres from the gate. A full day out, and an easy drive back for dinner.
Global Vipassana Pagoda
The golden dome above Gorai Creek, the largest stone dome built without supporting pillars. Open through the day and free to enter.
Gorai and Manori beaches
Gorai sand is minutes on foot. Manori sits further along the same coast, quieter still, reached by a short ferry or road trip.
